News of the original “Law & Order” detective duo came on screen in March.

USA TODAY has learned that Meloni’s Elliot Stabler, Hargitay’s longtime partner Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: SVU,” is returning to NBC in the “SVU” sub-series.

Stabler will be at the center of the new crime drama from Dick Wolf, the mega-producer behind “SVU” and “Chicago”, the three actions of NBC, “FBI” and “FBI: Most Wanted” on CBS. The new show, which has no title, is selected for 13 episodes.

In the spin-off, first reported by Deadline, Stabler heads up the NYPD’s Organized Crime Unit, which can lead to crossovers with Benson and her “SVU” team. Meloni and Hargitay formed a popular police tandem for 12 seasons on “SVU,” now in its 21st season to set records for a prime-time live show.
